How to take the Airport Express from GRU to São Paulo
How to use the GRU Airport Express, including the terminal transfer, fare, schedule and connections for Centro, Paulista and Pinheiros.

The train is a low-cost way to travel between Guarulhos Airport (GRU) and São Paulo, but it is not a terminal-to-city ride. Trains stop at Aeroporto-Guarulhos station, outside the passenger terminals. You must first take the free AeroGRU people mover or an airport shuttle bus between Terminals 1, 2 or 3 and the railway station.
For Centro, Avenida Paulista and Pinheiros, the simplest service is usually the Expresso Aeroporto (Airport Express) to Luz, followed by the Metrô if necessary. Stay aboard to Palmeiras-Barra Funda only when that station better suits your destination.
Service details checked on 30 October 2026. Recheck the operator’s timetable and alerts on your travel day, especially on holidays.
The journey in four steps
- At GRU, follow signs for AeroGRU or the railway station. The free automated people mover connects Terminals 1, 2 and 3 with Aeroporto-Guarulhos station. A September 2026 report put its expanded hours at 4am to midnight during an assisted-operation phase, when the operator could still make adjustments; check the airport’s signs on your travel day (reported AeroGRU update). The Airport Express timetable also lists a free GRU Airport bus between the station and terminals.
- Buy a rail ticket at Aeroporto-Guarulhos station. A single QR-code ticket costs R$5.40 and is valid for one journey on the Metrô and metropolitan rail network. The São Paulo Metrô ticket guide says it is sold at ticket offices and station machines, through the TOP app and through other listed digital channels.
- Board the Expresso Aeroporto toward Palmeiras-Barra Funda. Toward the city, scheduled stops are Guarulhos-Cecap, Brás, Luz and Palmeiras-Barra Funda. Brás is not a scheduled stop in the opposite, airport-bound direction; use Luz or Palmeiras-Barra Funda when travelling to GRU.
- Transfer for your neighborhood. Luz and Palmeiras-Barra Funda have free transfer areas, according to the Metrô’s ticket guidance. If you remain within the paid network, a normal Metrô or train connection does not require another rail ticket.
Allow time for three parts: the terminal transfer, a possible wait for the express and any city connection after Luz or Barra Funda.
Where to change for Centro, Paulista or Pinheiros
Centro: Luz
Get off at Luz for central São Paulo. From inside the station:
- Take Line 1-Blue toward Jabaquara for São Bento, Sé, Japão-Liberdade and Paraíso.
- Take Line 4-Yellow toward Vila Sônia for República and destinations west of Centro.
Luz is on the northern side of Centro, and the district covers a substantial area. Check the station nearest your accommodation rather than assuming the final walk will be short with luggage.
Avenida Paulista: change at Luz
For the central and western stretch of Avenida Paulista, take Line 4-Yellow toward Vila Sônia from Luz and leave at Paulista-Pernambucanas. For accommodation near the Paraíso end of the avenue, Line 1-Blue from Luz to Paraíso may be more direct.
Choose by the nearest station or hotel address, not merely the neighborhood name.
Pinheiros: change at Luz
Line 4-Yellow provides a direct westbound connection from Luz. Its operator lists the stations in this order: Paulista-Pernambucanas, Oscar Freire, Fradique Coutinho, Faria Lima, Pinheiros and Butantã (Motiva Line 4 guide). In practice:
- use Faria Lima for Largo da Batata;
- use Pinheiros for the rail and bus interchange, including Line 9-Emerald;
- use Butantã for destinations farther west.
The official metropolitan network map is useful for checking interchanges before travelling.
Barra Funda: remain on the express
Stay aboard to Palmeiras-Barra Funda if you are staying nearby, using its long-distance bus terminal or connecting to one of the rail services there. The operator lists connections with Line 3-Red and Lines 7, 8, 10 and 11 (Trivia lines and stations).
Barra Funda is west of Centro. For Paulista or Pinheiros, changing to Line 4 at Luz is generally the simpler route.
Airport Express schedule
The current detailed timetable lists departures from both Aeroporto-Guarulhos and Palmeiras-Barra Funda from 5am through midnight:
- Monday to Saturday: hourly;
- Sunday: generally every 30 minutes, although the published list should be checked for the exact departure time;
- holidays: check the date-specific operator alert rather than assuming the Sunday pattern.
Holiday and engineering plans can override the usual frequency. For example, Trivia announced hourly service for part of the 31 October–2 November 2026 period, including Sunday morning, before a return to 30-minute Sunday departures after 8am (operator notice). Check the alert on the Trivia lines page before leaving.
If the express has just departed, regular Line 13-Jade is a fallback. It runs from Aeroporto-Guarulhos to Engenheiro Goulart, where passengers can transfer to Line 12-Sapphire. This adds a change and is usually less straightforward for a first visit to Centro, Paulista or Pinheiros.
When the train makes sense
Choose the train when:
- both the rail service and terminal connection are running;
- your destination is convenient to Luz, Barra Funda or a simple Metrô transfer;
- you can manage your luggage through stations and interchanges;
- low cost matters more than door-to-door convenience.
A taxi or app ride can be more practical outside operating hours, with several heavy bags, for a group sharing the fare or when the accommodation is far from rail.
At Terminal 2, Uber, 99 and Rhino pickups use the signed Praça Pick-Up outside the arrivals level. The official GRU Airport pickup guide says the app assigns a pickup sector. At other terminals, follow the location displayed in the app and avoid unsolicited transport offers.
For a departing flight, work backward from the airline’s check-in deadline. Add time for the Metrô connection, a wait of up to an hour for the express and the transfer from Aeroporto-Guarulhos station to the correct terminal. The fare is attractive, but the timetable—and not just the distance on the map—should determine whether the train fits your flight.
